Because I live on a small 4+ acre hobby farm outside of the city limits of KC, I am afforded several opportunites to do something positive for the environment. More often than not, these "1Things" also have other benefits too. Here is 1Thing we are doing at our house:
We have chickens. The benefits to this are many...
1. They are a natural pest control. We do not need to spray any pesticides on our property as the chickens happily spend most of their time searching for bugs.
2. We have an almost endless supply of fresh "free range" chicken eggs. Not only are we saving money by not buying eggs at the store. But we are cutting back on our trash by not having the store bought egg cartons - some of which are made from icky styrofoam. Also, I cannot over-emphasize the superiority of these eggs to store-bought eggs in both quality and taste.
NOTE: An additional unexpected benefit to having an abundant supply of farm fresh eggs, is that we have been able to donate eggs to families in need, gift eggs to neighbors, friends, and family; and we have used them to barter with other area farmers for their farm raised produce and/or meat.
3. If we decide to let the chickens set on their eggs, they repopulate themselves - for free! Not to mention baby chicks are undeniably cute!
4. While we haven't done so yet, an obvious benefit is that fresh free range chicken tastes good.
Thanks for checking out my 1Thing. More to come...
